PGT Window Installation: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide
PGT window installation in Fort Lauderdale typically runs $850 to $2,400 per window installed, depending on the series (S, WinGuard, or SpectraGuard) and whether the opening needs an impact-rated re-fit. We stock PGT-compatible hardware, balances, and rollers on our trucks for most models, and we can usually schedule the work within the same week you call. Most owners discover the problem the way you probably did: a window that won’t stay up, a sash that drags, or a crank that spins without moving anything.
Here’s the thing about PGT windows in South Florida: they’re built for hurricanes, but they still wear out in everyday use. Salt air, humidity, and a decade of daily open-and-close cycles take their toll. When a part fails, the window itself is usually fine. You don’t need a whole new window. You need the right part matched to your specific PGT series, installed by someone who knows the difference between a WinGuard balance and an aluminum replacement that’ll bind up by July.
Which PGT Models This Applies To
We install parts across PGT’s three main South Florida lines. WinGuard is their impact-rated aluminum series, common in homes along the Las Olas corridor and most of Broward County east of I-95. SpectraGuard is the vinyl equivalent, and PGT S-series shows up in older homes built through the 2000s. The parts aren’t interchangeable between series, and sometimes not even between vintages of the same series. A WinGuard balance shoe from a 2015 run won’t seat cleanly in a 2011 window. We’ve pulled enough of these apart to know where the subtle differences hide.
To match the part correctly, we need the PGT label on the frame or sash corner (it lists the series, glass package, and manufacturing date), plus the window’s width and overall sash weight. With those two things, we can pin down the correct hardware without trial and error. On aftermarket versus OEM: for balances and rollers, a quality aftermarket equivalent often outlasts the original, especially in salt-exposed houses where the OEM hardware corrodes prematurely. For structural pieces such as lock mechanisms and hinge arms on impact-rated units, Owen’s position is simple: use the PGT-specified part, period. The load is engineered, not guessed.
Signs Your PGT Window Installation Is Failing
- The window won’t stay open, or you feel it getting heavier. Balances (the spring-loaded mechanisms inside the jamb) lose tension over time, and humidity accelerates it. One side usually goes before the other, which is why the sash starts tilting as it travels.
- You hear grinding or a metal-on-metal scrape when the sash moves. Rollers and pivot bars corrode in salt air. The wheel stops rolling and starts skidding, which chews up the track and can bend the pivot bar. We can replace both in the same visit.
- The crank handle spins but the sash barely opens or won’t open. The gear inside a casement operator strips after years of use, or the arm binds at the hinge. This is one of the most common calls we get on older PGT casements east of Federal Highway.
- Water pools on the sill after a heavy rain, even with the window closed. On PGT products this usually means a failing weatherstrip, a worn sill dam, or a sightline that’s out of adjustment. It’s not always the window: sometimes the flashing around the frame was done wrong at the original install, and no new part will fix that.
- You can see daylight or feel a draft through a closed, locked window. This is a sign the sash has shifted on its balances or the interlock isn’t engaging. On impact-rated windows that gap should be addressed quickly, because the sealing system is part of the structural rating.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Job | Typical Fort Lauderdale Installed Price |
|---|---|
| Single balance replacement (one side) | $140 – $260 |
| Both balances on one window | $220 – $420 |
| Slider roller and track service | $190 – $380 |
| Casement operator and hinge replacement | $280 – $620 |
| Full single-window part replacement with disassembly | $850 – $2,400 depending on series and scope |
What drives the range is mostly the series and the window’s location in the house. Second-story windows take more labor. Impact-rated units require more care to disassemble and re-seal correctly. Every price we give includes the parts, the labor, and the written Kingswell Guarantee. You get the price before we start, and that price doesn’t move unless you change the scope. We also clean the track, lubricate the moving hardware, and check the whole window for things that are about to fail, not just the part you called about.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s what you can safely check yourself: look at the label on the sash corner and write down the series and date. Look for obvious rust or broken springs inside the jamb track. Tilt the sash inward (PGT single-hungs tilt easily from the top) and check the shoe at the bottom corner. But I would stop there. Balance springs hold real tension, and a loaded vinyl shoe can snap back hard enough to hurt someone. Stripping a window down to swap balances without the right tools and without knowing the series-specific clip style is how homeowners turn a $260 fix into a broken frame and a bigger bill. If the window is impact-rated, anything that changes how the sash seats changes how the window performs in a storm. That’s not something to guess at.
If you’re looking at a PGT window that’s not working right, call us at (754) 354-5397 and describe what it’s doing. Nine times out of ten we can tell you over the phone whether it’s a truck-stock part and what the job should cost. Tell me what the house needs, and we’ll figure out the rest from there.
FAQs
With coastal exposure, expect 8 to 12 years from an original set of balances full stop. Homes east of Federal Highway with direct salt exposure can see failures a bit sooner, and homes farther west routinely see 15 years or more. The failure isn’t usually sudden: the spring loses tension gradually until you notice the window is harder to lift.
For balances, no. The spring is sealed inside the tube and isn’t serviceable. For rollers and operators, sometimes, but the repair usually costs more in labor than replacing the part with new. We’ll tell you which side of that line your part falls on when we see it.
Most single-window repairs run 45 to 90 minutes. If we’re doing balances on several windows in the same run, the whole project usually fits in a morning. We give you an arrival window, we keep it, and we leave the area looking like we were never there.
We keep the most common WinGuard, SpectraGuard, and S-series balances, rollers, handles, and operators stocked on our service vehicles here in the Fort Lauderdale area. Even when we need to order something from our supplier, most parts land within a few days, because we carry eight manufacturer lines including PGT, CGI, CWS, and ES Windows.
No. Westlight Windows Fort Lauderdale is an independently owned and operated Kingswell location that installs and services PGT products alongside seven other manufacturer lines. We’re not tied to one brand’s sales goals, so we can tell you straight whether the part is worth replacing or whether the window is at the end of its useful life.
When you’re ready, call (754) 354-5397 and ask for Owen or any of our techs. We’ll get you a written price before the work starts, and we’ll back the repair with the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If it fails within the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s the Kingswell Way: the price in writing, the arrival window kept, the site cleaned up, and the work guaranteed.
